Trailer’s underride guard failes test

Crashes into the back of large tractor-trailers, caused by failing underride. The underride guards on the back of tractor-trailers have not been keeping vehicles safe from sliding beneath a truck’s trailer in a crash, according to the Institute.

A vehicle windshield is crushed resulting in life-threatening head and neck injuries, even decapitation, according to the institute, which is financed by the insurance industry.

Most guards fail to prevent potentially fatal underride, the institute found. In a current crash tests, a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu hit a parked truck at 35 m.p.h. The Malibu is an insurance institute Top Safety Pick and it did a good job of protecting the crash test dummy in the institute’s 40 m.p.h. moderate overlap frontal crash test. Serious injuries to a person in that type of real-world crash would be unlikely.

When the guards failed, head and neck injuries were so high that a driver in a real-world crash would have died, according to the report.

The more a car moves to the right or left of the center line of trailer, “the less effective the guards are,” said David Zuby, the institute’s chief research officer.

CAR ACCIDENTS AND WHIPLASH

How long can this pain in my neck go on?  Well that depends in how serious your neck injury.  Some factors that will determine how long your pain will last includes:
  • Age
  • The seriousness if the accident.
  • Any treatment for your injuries after the accident.

‘Whiplash Associated Disorder’ (WAD), is  a term used to describe and grade whiplash injuries from 1 to 5 pertaining to car accidents and it's symptoms.

Rear end accident, t-bone accident or even a head-on collision can cause the head and neck to violently thrust forward, back or side to side. Pain experienced after the accident, is due to strains and possible tears to surrounding muscles, tendons and ligaments of the neck as well is impaction of the lower vertebrae in the cervical (neck) spine (most commonly at C5 and C6 spinal level).

Diagnosing whiplash requires a physical examination and possibly MRI or X-ray.  One the severity of the injury is determined then a treatment plan is put into motion for recovery.

WAD can result from speeds as little ad15km/h, even in minor altercations, one should seek medical advice on the treatment and rehabilitation of any resulting neck pain.

Adequate treatment must be sought in the early stages of Whiplash, neck pain.  Delay in treating WAD can can result in degenerative changes causing weakness to the supporting soft tissues of the spine, resulting in a chronic pain condition which still requires attention.

Symptoms of any neck injury may include:
  • Pain and aching in the neck and upper back
  • Headaches
  • Pins and needles in the arms and hands
  • Pain on any particular movement of the head and neck
  • Dizziness and even visual disturbances
  • Weakness felt in the arms and hands

If you have been involved in a car accident and suffer from any of the above, it will  probably be in your best interest to seek advice from a pain specialist to determine a correct diagnosis and assist in your recovery.  Once you have seen a physician to treat your whiplash, the next step is to hire a personal injury attorney.

Report That Crash in NYC

The NYPD is primarily responsible for collecting crash data in New York City. It's estimated that approximately 78,000 crashes happen each year in the New York City metro area. However, the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad investigates less than half of 1 percent of all crashes (Transportation Alternatives, 2012. Reclaim, Vol 18, #4, p.19).

New York City needs more comprehensive crash reporting, and that starts with New Yorkers like YOU.

In addition to mapping more information about where and how crashes and “near misses” occur, this map also provides a tool for witnesses of a crash to reach out to the victim(s), for any police, legal or insurance needs.

These accidents include:

Cyclist & Motorist crash   Cyclist & Motorist crash

Pedestrian & Motorist crash   Pedestrian & Motorist crash

Motorist & Motorist crash    Motorist & Motorist crash

If you witnessed a crash:
  • If the crash has not yet been reported on the map, fill out the Survey.
  • If the crash is already on the map, submit a Witness Peport. Your comments will remain private.

Child Injuries Preventable : New York Rear-end Accident

Infant suffers injuries from rear-end vehicle crash. No seat beltsor child restraintsA 3-month-old boy suffered a fractured skull when a minivan rear-ended another vehicle driving backwards on the New York State Thruway near the northbound toll plaza in Spring Valley, NY.

A 14-month-old girl suffered bruises during the crash as well. according to police reports both babies were sitting on the laps of adults and safely secured in rear-facing infant seats when the crash occurred.

The 3-month-old boy suffered bleeding on his brain and was being treated in the hospital’s ICU. The 14-month-old girl suffered minor bumps and bruises.

Both vehicles were demolished.

The crash occurred the driver of the four-door sedan on the the state highway accidentally passing the tollbooths, where trucks must pay to drive on the Thruway.

The driver began then to back up along the center lane when a minivan rammed the sedan from behind. The van carried 12 passengers, including the two infants and was traveling from Brooklyn to Monroe.

The impact propelled the sedan forward by 30 feet, according to police. No other persons were hurt in the collision, other then the babies.

Let's review the factors that contributed to this vehicle accident.

  1. Distraction of the drivers
  2. Negligence of the parents involved not safely restraining the two children.

It is common knowledge that children under 4 must be buckled in child safety seats. The speed of the two vehicles is also under investigation. Injuries could have been prevented in recent New York rear-end accident had proper child restraint  precautions taken.

New York car accident attorney, Paul Ajlouny reminds drivers that what the child restraint laws are:

  • Children under three years old must use an appropriate child restraint when traveling in vehicle (except in the rear of a taxi).
  • Children aged three or more years old and up must use an appropriate child restraint when traveling in vehicles fitted with seat belts
